New batteries for your KOHLER® generator are cheap; lost power can be very expensive. Routine replacement of batteries should be part of your fall maintenance. Why? The heat of summer wears out your generator’s batteries much faster than winter cold. With the hot summer we’ve just had – chances are your battery needs some attention.
Even a generator’s successful load bank test doesn’t guarantee the batteries will work. A cell could still go out very quickly, and the next time the power goes out, the generator simply won’t have power to come on.
What would it cost if the generator doesn’t start?
At RDU, a failed generator could cost lives. We check the generators for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at Raleigh Durham International Airport (RDU). KOHLER® generators back up air traffic control equipment that regulates ground control, air control and flight data/clearance delivery to avoid collisions. If the power goes out the airport, each piece of specialty equipment is backed by a KOHLER® generator to seamlessly continue its function so that planes are tracked and guided appropriately.
Perdue Poultry, another Palmer client, mandates that their chicken farms have their batteries changed every two years. Experience has taught them that a non-starting generator means dead birds, lost profits and a really bad smell in the hen houses.
And what about you? Think about what a loss of power could cost your home or business. Would it mean lost production hours, ruined property, or uncomfortable customers? What about data? Tax and accounting information, student records or even your children’s baby pictures could be a headache to retrieve or reproduce.
At Palmer, we have a rule of thumb: If your batteries are three years old, it’s time to change them. And fall is the perfect season to do that.
Checking your batteries is one simple thing you can request of your Palmer Generator technician. If there’s a problem, there’s a good chance that we have what you need on our truck. Don’t let a suddenly dead battery cost you.
